FT: Clarence United 3(Mcleod 40′, Sarah Nellis 42′, Johnston 50′ ) v Olympia Warriors 5(Fitzgerald 3′, Cantrell 13′, 35′, 59′, 70′)

United – Warriors

90′+1 FT Really fantastic contest, it was played in patches with both sides having dominant periods. Both midfields fought hard, Jones had the biggest stamp on the contest. Olympia dominated more of the contest and as such took home the choccies, ultimately Cantrell’s dominance decided the result. The reds really busted their gut to get back in the contest from 3-0 down, they gave it a good show, but difficult to take home three points when Cantrell is in such good touch. Clarence definitely missed Ridler, who did a cracker job of shutting her down when they last met.

90′ A late chance for Clarence! Gillbee with a long corner turned shot catches Hale off guard, she manages to pick it up and clears it from the danger area.

89′ Temperature update, I am probably minus 40, this place is ridiculous.

87′ Jones on another foray forward looking for Cantrell but the defence holds up well and  Nellis sees the ball out of harms way.

85′  Reds lacking composure with the ball, panicky in defence.

84′ SUB [Olympia]: Off: Brakey, On: Baker

82′ SUB [Olympia]: Off: Chambers, On: Saunders

80′ Johnson with a bit of magic on the left wing, whips a ball into Cantrell but the ball is blocked before it reaches her and is belted clear by Kannegiesser.

78′ Warrior’s dominating the contest at the moment, Clarence starved of space and struggling to string together passes.

77′ SUB [Clarence]: Off: Mcleod, On: O’brien

75′ Johnston threads through a great ball to Sarah Nellis’s advantage, Hale sprints out and lunges out to meet it first.

70′ GOAL! 5-3 to the warriors. Darting through midfield Johnson knocks a great ball to Cantrell’s advantage, she takes a touch knocking it beyond Van Der Niet and slots it past the diving Lilley. Cantrell with 4!!! Red hot at the ice cold Wentworth Park.

69′ Interesting substitution for Clarence, Roy had been very solid down back for the reds, don’t know whether taking Roy off will help the red’s chances.

67′ SUB [Clarence] Off: Roy, On: Lilley

65′ Rani Cavaretta really working her way into the game, was missing in the first half.

59′ GOAL!! The warriors take the lead once again! Johnson puts it on a platter for Cantrell. Cantrell races Kannegiesser to the ball, meeting it first Cantrell pokes the ball into the back of the net.

58′  A Free kick taken by Johnson is struck hard but easily collected by Van Der Niet.

53′ Another chance for the reds! This time Sarah Nellis finds space, her shot however is hit straight at Hale.

50′ GOAL! And it’s back to level pegging. Johnston goals for the reds! Striking it from the left and into the bottom right hand corner. Hale dived at it but moved too late.

48′ Fitzgerald bursts into the danger area and belts it into the sidenetting. A close call early for the reds defence.

If the reds attack the game like they did in the latter part of the half, they are every chance of stealing this one. While Hale has done reasonably well, she struggled to deal with some of the United efforts on goal late in the first half. An area I definitely think where Clarence can exploit the Warriors in this half.

Second Half

Interesting to note, Kim Barker wandered by me late in the half and told me tonight’s officiating referee is his daughter.

Apologies for some delay on posts, internet dropped out at one point, must be struggling with the cold.

45 HT Great half of football at Wentworth Park! Olympia exploded out of the blocks and the reds have really brought it back with some clinical work up front. Cantrell has been afforded far too much space to this point and while the reds are in the contest, Cantrell is not a player you want to have time and space with the ball.

42′ GOAL! Just like that the reds are back in it!!! Sarah Nellis with a great strike from the left side of the box. She met a nice ball in space and expertly finished in the bottom right to bring the reds right back in it.

40′ GOAL! Mcleod Strikes from range! Great goal!!! Caught Hale off guard, the ball sailed over her head and into the back of the net.

38′  A golden chance goes begging for Clarence, Gillbee punches it into the penalty area but the ball is met first by Obrien, who mops up for the Warriors.

35′ GOAL! 3-0 to Olympia. Cantrell again! Cantrell can not be stopped. A ball from Fitzgerald reached Cantrell as she entered the box, Cantrell took her time and coolly slotted it home in the top right corner to extend the Warriors advantage to 3.

32′ A chance for United to get one back, some great footwork from Nellis on the left wing, knocking it to Gillbee sends her on a run toward goal, her shot however misses to the right of goal.

27′ Clarence break down the left through Gillbee, she loses it but battles for it again and wins it off McNeill and fires a long bomb over the bar.

25′ Cantrell again causing headaches! This time winning the ball on the right and delivering a dangerous ball to the back post. Johnson gets there late and shoots, Van Der Niet stops it, diving to her left.

22′ Olympia playing with a higher intensity this evening, frequently first to the ball.

15′ Cantrell with a chance at the edge of the box, taking a touch past Kannegiesser and belting it left past the goal. A let off the reds.

13′ Goal! 2-0 to the Warriors. A scramble in the box following a corner sees the warriors put another one past Van Der Niet. The red hot Cantrell this time netting one from the edge of the box.

12′  A great through ball by Goss gives Berry a look at goal, but she is thwarted by Hale who darts out to meet it.

10′ Looks as if Danielle Kannegiesser has been given the job on the red hot Cantrell who is coming off a bag of six against Nelson

6′ Danger looms again for united with Jones whipping in an ominous ball into the box only to be cut off at the last second by Undy.

3′ GOAL!  Fitzgerald strikes early for the warriors, a scrappy venture forward sees her strike home from the right side of the box.

2′ Interesting to note Ottavi is missing for the warriors, which has seen Hale take the gloves.

1′  Early chance for the reds!! Scramble in the box, Jones blocks a shot and boots it clear.

On form it is tough to see the reds upsetting Olympia, but if they can get a point from tonight’s contest it will go a long way in keeping their title hopes alive.

Damian Gill calling tonight’s Statewide cup final rematch from a freezing Wentworth park. Notably a controversial positional choice from Steve Kannegiesser, going for Danielle Kannegiesser as his right back in the absence of Rachel Ridler. Danielle is usually an attacking player, will be interesting to see how this experimental move goes. The reds strong marking was a factor in them going close in their last encounter.

Line ups:

Clarence: Van Der Niet, E.Nellis, Roy, Undy, Kannegiesser, Mcleod, Johnston, Goss, Gillbee, S.Nellis, Berry.

Olympia: HaleObrien, Nettlefold, Brakey, Mcneill Fitzgerald,  Johnson, Jones Cantrell, Cavaretta , Chambers.

Hang on a tick. I am pretty sure the young lad who is writing these reports is doing this out of the goodness of his heart, withstanding the brutal Tasmanian weather to provide the listeners with very insightful and well written posts. Thought people would have a little bit more respect.
